Wire is used in the following applications. For each of the following applications, prepare a list of wire characteristics that are relevant and also explain why each characteristic is important for the application : (1) Designing the filament for a light bulb; (2) Designing the electrical system for an air plane.

Designing the Filament for a Light Bulb:

  1. Resistance to High Temperatures:
    • Why it’s important: Light bulb filaments get extremely hot when they light up. The wire needs to withstand these high temperatures without melting or losing its functionality.
  2. Material Choice (Tungsten):
    • Why it’s important: Tungsten is used because it has a very high melting point. Even though it’s brittle, its ability to resist melting at high temperatures makes it ideal for a light bulb filament.

Designing the Electrical System for an Airplane:

  1. Weight:
    • Why it’s important: Airplanes need to be as light as possible for efficient fuel consumption and performance. The weight of the wire used in the electrical system contributes to the overall weight of the plane, so lighter materials are preferred.
  2. Toughness of Insulation:
    • Why it’s important: Aircraft experience vibrations during flight, which can cause wires to rub against each other. Tough insulation helps prevent damage due to chafing, ensuring the wires remain intact and functional.
  3. Resistance to Fire:
    • Why it’s important: In-flight fires are extremely dangerous. Having wire insulation that is resistant to fire helps prevent the spread of flames, reducing the risk of electrical fires on the aircraft.
