Card sorting for websites :
- Purpose:
- Card sorting helps organize website content effectively.
- When to Use:
- Done after gathering a good amount of site content information through other methods.
- Process: a. Prepare Cards:
- Identify around 50 content topics and write them on index cards.
- Include blank cards for additional topics suggested by participants and colored cards for groupings.
b. Setup:- Arrange a table for spreading out cards.
- Select 5 to 12 participants representing various users.
c. Instructions:- Explain that you want to understand how users think about organizing information.
- Participants sort the cards into groups they find meaningful, explaining their thought process out loud.
- They can add new cards if needed during sorting.
d. Observation:- Take notes on their sorting rationale.
- If someone has too many groups, ask for hierarchical arrangement.
e. Naming Groups:- Participants provide names for each grouping on colored cards, using terms they expect.
f. Recording:- Record groupings using card numbers.
g. Reshuffle:- Shuffle cards for the next session.
h. Analysis:
- After all sessions, analyze results for commonalities in how participants grouped content.
- Goal:
- Helps build the website’s structure, map, and page content based on how users naturally categorize information.
